Virat Kohli Breaks Historic IPL Record, Becomes First Player to Smash Over 770 Fours

During the IPL 2025 final, Kohli surpassed Shikhar Dhawan to become the all-time leader in boundaries, etching another milestone in his illustrious career.

June 3, 2025 In a landmark moment during the IPL 2025 final, Virat Kohli etched his name in the history books yet again—this time for becoming the first player in Indian Premier League history to hit over 770 fours. The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) stalwart achieved the feat in the high-stakes clash against Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Entering the match, Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan—who retired from all forms of cricket last year—were tied at 768 career IPL boundaries. In the fourth over of the innings, Kohli elegantly drove Kyle Jamieson for a four to move past Dhawan. He went on to score 43 runs off 35 balls, including three boundaries, taking his total to 771 IPL fours.

The record adds to Kohli’s extensive list of achievements in the IPL, as he continues his quest for a maiden title with RCB.

Meanwhile, both RCB and PBKS entered the final unchanged, hoping to end their long wait for a first-ever IPL trophy. PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer, speaking at the toss, expressed confidence in his team’s mental state. “We’ve been focusing on staying calm—it’s a big day and we’re ready to embrace it. I’ve imagined lifting that trophy,” said Iyer.

RCB skipper Rajat Patidar, leading the side in place of an injured Faf du Plessis earlier in the season, echoed a composed approach. “We also wanted to bowl first. It’s a flat pitch, we’ll try to set a solid target. It’s a big game, but we’ll treat it like just another away match and give it our best,” he said.

As the final unfolded under Ahmedabad’s electric atmosphere, Kohli’s boundary milestone added a historic sheen to an already iconic evening of cricket.
