Is Lionel Messi Coming to Kerala? Here’s the Latest Update
June 7, 2025: Kerala Sports Minister V Abdurahiman has reaffirmed that football legend Lionel Messi and the Argentina national team will visit the state later this year, dispelling earlier doubts surrounding the much-anticipated event. Speaking to the media on Saturday, the minister confirmed that the friendly match will likely take place in October or November, aligning with FIFA’s official window for international friendlies.

Months after speculation that the visit had been cancelled due to contractual issues, Abdurahiman has assured fans that all hurdles have been cleared. “The sponsor has paid the match fee now. There are no more obstacles,” he said, referring to Reporter Broadcasting Company, the event’s official sponsor. The Minister also publicly thanked the sponsor via a Facebook post, captioned simply: “Messi will come.”
He further noted that the Argentina Football Association (AFA) would announce the official date and other match details through a joint statement with the sponsor. The government, meanwhile, will handle security, accommodation, and all logistics as the visiting team will be treated as state guests.
The confirmation is a massive relief for football lovers across Kerala, where Messi enjoys an almost cult-like following. Argentina, the reigning FIFA World Cup champions, will be visiting India for the first time in decades, making it a historic occasion for Indian football fans.
