Jannik Sinner Shines at Wimbledon 2025 with Dominant Win; Zverev Knocked Out in Major Upset
Wimbledon 2025 witnessed a spectacular opening performance from World No. 1 Jannik Sinner, who made an emphatic start to his campaign on Tuesday with a straight-sets demolition of fellow Italian Luca Nardi. The dominant display stood in stark contrast to Carlos Alcaraz’s opening-round thriller, and came on a day of high drama that also saw third seed Alexander Zverev crash out in a shocking five-set loss to France’s Arthur Rinderknech.
Sinner’s Commanding Start
Playing with the poise of a true top seed, Jannik Sinner dismantled Nardi 6-4, 6-3, 6-0 in just one hour and 48 minutes. The Italian ace didn’t face a single break point and converted five out of the 13 break point opportunities he earned, showcasing clinical precision from the baseline.
“I’m very happy to come back here. It’s such a special place for me,” said Sinner in his on-court interview, as quoted by the ATP. “Playing against an Italian is very unfortunate for us, but someone has to go through, and I’m happy it’s me. The atmosphere is amazing. Thanks so much. I know it is very hot, very humid — I don’t remember the last time London had this weather!”
The top-seeded Italian will now face Aleksandar Vukic in the second round. Vukic advanced after defeating Tseng Chun-Hsin in four sets, 6-3, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(5).
Zverev Shocked by Rinderknech in Five-Set Marathon
In the biggest upset of the day, France’s Arthur Rinderknech pulled off the first Top 5 win of his career, outlasting Alexander Zverev in a four-hour and 44-minute thriller. The match ended 7-6(3), 6-7(8), 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-4 in favor of the Frenchman, who broke down emotionally after sealing victory.
“I do not even know where to start. My legs are still shaking. I’m just happy the match is finished. It is very difficult, this sport… but what a moment, such emotion,” said Rinderknech post-match.
“You cannot really be in control when you play someone like Sascha Zverev, the World No. 3. He has been at the top for so many years. It’s my first Top 5 win, and in the biggest stadium in the world,” he added, still visibly overwhelmed.
Zverev came into Wimbledon with a promising 6-2 grass-court record in 2025, highlighted by a finals appearance in Stuttgart and a semifinal run in Halle. However, his campaign ended prematurely, failing to live up to the expectations that surrounded him heading into the Championships.
Wimbledon 2025 Continues to Surprise
With top seeds already feeling the heat and unexpected names making waves, Wimbledon 2025 promises high drama and thrilling tennis in the days to come. All eyes will be on Jannik Sinner as he attempts to justify his No. 1 ranking with a deep run at the All England Club.
