Kane Williamson’s PSL Return in Jeopardy Due to This Fear

May 14, 2025: The Pakistan Super League (PSL 2025) continues to grapple with significant challenges ahead of its restart, as concerns over security have raised doubts about the return of several foreign players, including New Zealand’s Kane Williamson.

The tenth edition of the PSL kicked off in Karachi on April 11 with 37 foreign players participating, but a drone attack near Rawalpindi Stadium during the May 8 match between Peshawar Zalmi and Karachi Kings forced the postponement of the event. As a result, the remaining fixtures, which were originally scheduled to be played in Pakistan, were delayed.

The PSL was initially considering a relocation to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), but plans to move were also put on hold following the escalation of security concerns.

While some foreign stars, including former Australian opener David Warner, have confirmed their commitment to returning to Pakistan to play the remaining matches for Karachi Kings, others remain hesitant. Reports from Pakistan media reveal that eight New Zealand players, including former captain Kane Williamson, are reluctant to travel back to Pakistan despite assurances of enhanced security measures.

Despite these concerns, there is a glimmer of hope for the tournament’s resumption. After both Pakistan and New Zealand agreed to a ceasefire, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced that the PSL will resume on May 17, with the final scheduled for May 25.

PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi expressed confidence in the tournament’s restart, posting on X: “The PSL 2025 will resume on May 17, with the final on May 25. The League will pick up from where it left off, six teams with zero fear.”

The remaining four group games will take place at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, with the playoffs and final to be held in Lahore, according to a statement from the PSB.

Meanwhile, across the border, the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) is also set to resume on Saturday, following its postponement due to the ongoing India-Pakistan conflict.

With the PSL facing challenges on multiple fronts, all eyes are now on whether the tournament can successfully pick up the pieces and finish its season amid heightened security concerns and international scrutiny.
