KL Rahul's Redemption: From World Cup Heartbreak To Champions Trophy Hero
March 11,2025: India's 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup campaign ended in heartache, with Australia defeating India in the final despite a historic 10-match winning streak. India was bundled out for just 240 runs, and there was plenty of post-match analysis to understand the reasons behind the failure. Many blamed Rohit Sharma's risky dismissal against Glenn Maxwell, while others pointed to the failures of Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, and Suryakumar Yadav, all of whom were making their first World Cup final appearances.
However, one player stood at the center of much of the criticism: KL Rahul. Despite playing a knock of 66 runs, his innings consumed 107 balls, included 49 dot balls, and featured just one boundary. Fans and critics alike labeled him as the "choker" of the final, which made the disappointment even more poignant.
In the aftermath of that devastating loss, Rahul became the subject of intense scrutiny. Many fans called for his removal from the ODI setup, but Rahul had something else in mind. One and a half years after the World Cup disappointment, he delivered a remarkable reply that fully showcased his class, talent, and immense potential.
Rahul had already faced his share of criticism over the years, particularly after the 2022 T20 World Cup, where his struggles with strike rates and consistency kept him out of India's T20 plans. His IPL 2024 season with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), where he scored 520 runs with a strike rate of 136.12, was solid, but not enough to push him back into India's T20 World Cup plans for 2024.
But it was the World Cup that remained at the forefront of Rahul's mind. In a candid conversation with teammate Ravichandran Ashwin on Ashwin's YouTube channel, Rahul opened up about his biggest regret from the 2023 World Cup final. "The World Cup final against Australia, I was stuck in the moment, whether to take down Starc or just play him as it was reversing, bowling in tough angle – in that confusing moment, I ended up nicking it," Rahul admitted. "If I could have played till the end, it could have been 30+ runs, and probably the World Cup in our hands. That is what I regret."
From being one of the most promising young cricketers in the world to watching his team win the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 from the sidelines, Rahul's journey seemed to take an uncertain turn. Despite this, he continued to stay focused and committed to his game. When India faced Sri Lanka in August, Rahul was demoted to the number six or seven spot in the lineup, which led to dismal returns. However, his spirit never wavered, and his determination eventually paid off in the 2024 Champions Trophy.
In the Champions Trophy, Rahul was entrusted with a new role as a finisher – something that had often been considered his Achilles' heel. He played his part in sealing a victory against Bangladesh with a six and made significant contributions in the knockouts against Australia and New Zealand.
In the semi-final against Australia, Rahul held the innings together alongside Virat Kohli in a tense 265-run chase. His 42* off 34 balls (including two sixes) delivered the finishing touches and helped India cross the line. In the final, during a challenging 252-run chase, Rahul held his composure and played a vital role in India's victory. He remained unbeaten on 34* off 33 balls, guiding India to their second-successive white-ball title.
After the match, Rahul reflected on his performance, saying, "Keeping composure is all that matters, happy to have done it this time. I have batted in times like this in three out of the five games. Hard to put in words, but the team has pure skill." His maturity and calmness under pressure were lauded by his skipper, Rohit Sharma, who praised Rahul's ability to remain calm and deliver when it mattered most.
KL Rahul finished the 2024 Champions Trophy with an outstanding 140 runs in four innings at an average of 140.00 and a strike rate of 97.90, significantly higher than his career strike rate of over 88. This performance has not only redeemed him in the eyes of fans but also confirmed that he has fully shaken off the weight of past failures.
Will KL Rahul’s Champions Trophy redemption mark a new chapter in his career? With his newfound confidence, this could just be the beginning of a career that has long promised much.
