Gautam Gambhir Backs Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli Amid Retirement Speculations After BGT Loss

India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir remains hopeful about Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s future in Test cricket after a disappointing 3-1 series defeat against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Sydney [Australia], January 5: After India’s 3-1 series loss to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), head coach Gautam Gambhir addressed the growing speculations surrounding the future of cricket stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the Test format.

India’s decade-long dominance in the prestigious series came to an abrupt end as Australia’s pace attack dismantled the Indian batting lineup throughout the series. Rohit and Virat, considered pillars of India’s batting order, faced severe criticism for their underwhelming performances.

Gambhir Stands Firm on Rohit and Virat’s Future:

Addressing the media in the post-match press conference, Gambhir expressed faith in both senior players, emphasizing their commitment and passion for Indian cricket.

“I can’t talk about the future of any player. It’s up to them as well. They still have the hunger, they still have the passion, they are tough people, and hopefully, they can continue to take Indian cricket forward. Whatever they plan, they will plan in the best interest of the team. I have to be fair and equal to everyone in the dressing room,” said Gambhir.

Rohit Sharma Responds to Retirement Rumors:

Rohit Sharma opted out of the final Test in Sydney, fueling speculations about his retirement. However, the Indian captain clarified his stance in an interview with Star Sports, dismissing all rumors.

“I have stood down from this Test, but I am not going anywhere. This is not a retirement or moving away from the format. A guy with a mic, pen, or laptop, what they write or say, it doesn’t matter. They cannot decide for us. I took the call to stand down after coming to Sydney. Yes, runs are not coming, but there is no guarantee that you won’t be able to score two months down the line or six months down the line. I am mature enough to know what I am doing,” Rohit said.

Series Stats Tell the Story:

  • Rohit Sharma: Managed only 31 runs across the series, struggling to make an impact with the bat.
  • Virat Kohli: Scored 190 runs in five Tests at an average of 23.75 and a strike rate of 47.98, with his last notable innings being an unbeaten century in Perth.

Despite their struggles, both players remain key figures in the Indian Test setup.

Looking Ahead:

With hopes of reaching the WTC final dashed, India will regroup for their next Test series against England in June. The focus will now be on team rebuilding, with Gambhir and the management expected to make crucial decisions to balance experience with fresh talent.
