South Africa Announces Squad For Home ODIs Against Pakistan

December 12, 2024: South Africa’s preparations for next year’s ICC Champions Trophy are in full swing with the announcement of a 15-member squad for their upcoming ODI series against Pakistan, which will begin on December 17, 2024.

The squad, led by captain Temba Bavuma, sees several important inclusions and returns. Kagiso Rabada returns to South Africa’s ODI squad for the first time since the 2023 Cricket World Cup. Rabada’s presence will strengthen the pace attack, adding experience and firepower.

David Miller and Heinrich Klaasen return to the ODI side after a break from the format since December 2023, bringing both batting depth and finishing ability to the squad.

A major inclusion is Kwena Maphaka, a young, talented all-rounder who has impressed with his performances at the youth level. Maphaka, 18, was named Player of the Tournament at the 2024 ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup, where he took 21 wickets at an exceptional average of 9.71. This marks his first call-up to South Africa’s senior ODI squad.

The pace attack will be bolstered by Ottneil Baartman, while all-rounders Marco Jansen and Andile Phehlukwayo will add balance to the side.

In terms of spin, Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi will be crucial in the middle overs, providing both control and attacking options.

The series against Pakistan will be an important opportunity for South Africa to solidify their plans and try different combinations in the lead-up to the Champions Trophy. Anrich Nortje is notably absent due to a toe injury, but the squad remains strong and focused on securing valuable ODI experience.
