Lord’s Test: Jofra Archer Tipped To Make Pat Cummins-Esque Return

July 10, 2025: Former England fast bowler Steve Harmison believes Jofra Archer has the potential to make a triumphant return to Test cricket — similar to Pat Cummins’ comeback story — as the pace ace gears up to feature in the third Test against India at Lord’s.

Jofra Archer is set to return to red-ball cricket after a four-year hiatus, having overcome a series of injury setbacks. The 29-year-old replaces Josh Tongue in England’s playing XI and will bowl at Lord’s for the first time in Tests since his explosive debut summer in 2019.

Harmison: “It’s Brilliant to See Him Back”

Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, Harmison expressed joy at seeing Jofra Archer back in action, while also criticizing past narratives that questioned Archer’s commitment to Test cricket.

“It’s obviously massive news. I’m just pleased to see the individual back—forget the team for a second,” said Harmison.

“How many times he’s been written off, accused of not wanting to play Test match cricket—which I think is a little bit disrespectful. To get him in a position to walk out at Lord’s on Thursday morning—it’s brilliant.”

Parallels with Pat Cummins

Harmison drew a direct comparison to Pat Cummins, who was out of Test cricket for nearly six years due to injuries but returned to become the No. 1-ranked bowler and captain of the Australian Test side.

“Jofra, for me, has always wanted to play Test cricket. He wants to be the best version of himself. Fingers crossed, like Cummins all those years ago, he’ll now hit the ground running. I think you’ll see his career path go on an upward scale,” Harmison added.

A Crucial Asset for England

Jofra Archer has played 13 Tests, claiming 42 wickets at an average of 31.04. His return is seen as a major boost for England’s Test ambitions and could significantly impact the outcome of the ongoing five-match series against India.

“It’s a big moment for him and a huge moment for English cricket to get an asset like that back on the field in all three formats,” Harmison concluded.

All eyes will be on Lord’s as Archer marks his return to the longest format — with speed, fire, and expectations riding high.
