Luis Díaz Completes Permanent Transfer to Bayern Munich from Liverpool
Munich, Germany | July 30, 2025: Colombian international Luis Díaz has officially completed a permanent transfer to Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich, departing Liverpool after a highly impactful three-and-a-half-year spell at Anfield. The move is reportedly valued at €75 million (£65.5 million), making him the third most expensive transfer in Bayern’s history, behind Harry Kane and Lucas Hernández. Díaz has signed a four-year contract with an option for an additional year with the German champions, effective until 2029.
Díaz’s departure marks a significant moment for Liverpool, where he played a crucial role in securing four major trophies, including the Premier League title last season. Arriving from FC Porto in early 2022, the winger made an immediate impression under Jürgen Klopp, showcasing his blistering pace, skillful trickery, and attacking prowess. In his eventful first half-season (2021-22), ‘Lucho’ registered six goals and four assists in 26 appearances, contributing to Liverpool’s Carabao Cup and Emirates FA Cup triumphs, both won via penalty shootouts against Chelsea. He also featured in the Champions League final, where Liverpool were runners-up to Real Madrid.
His momentum was briefly halted by a serious knee injury in the early stages of the 2022-23 campaign, limiting him to just 21 games. However, after switching to the iconic No. 7 shirt that summer, Díaz steadily regained his top form. Over the subsequent two seasons (2023-24 and 2024-25), he made 101 appearances, scoring 30 goals and providing 10 assists.
The 2023-24 season saw another League Cup success at Wembley. With Arne Slot replacing Jürgen Klopp as head coach, Díaz’s role evolved. While predominantly deployed in wide attacking positions, Slot increasingly utilized him as the central attacker in a front three during the past campaign. This tactical shift proved highly effective, as Díaz enjoyed his most prolific season at Liverpool. He was instrumental in leading the team to a Premier League title triumph, secured with four matches to spare.
Thirteen of his 17 goals in the 2024-25 season came in the Premier League, including a memorable brace at Old Trafford that set an early marker for Slot’s side. Another personal highlight was a second-half hat-trick in a dominant 4-0 Champions League victory over Bayer Leverkusen at Anfield. His final moments in a Reds shirt were characterized by the jubilant championship celebrations with supporters in April and May.
Díaz’s transfer comes as Liverpool strengthens its financial position, potentially eyeing new signings like Alexander Isak. Reports suggest Liverpool had attempted to renew Díaz’s contract, which was due to expire in 2027, but no agreement could be reached. With Bayern improving their bid to meet Liverpool’s valuation, the club reluctantly agreed to his sale. Díaz had expressed a desire to seek a new challenge.
In Munich, Díaz is expected to bolster Bayern’s forward line, particularly after the long-term injury to Jamal Musiala and the departures of veterans Thomas Müller and Leroy Sané. He joins a team now under the management of Vincent Kompany.
Everyone at Liverpool FC has extended their thanks to Luis for his contributions during his time at the club and wished him the best for his future endeavors in the Bundesliga.
