The strike not only secured his place in Belgium’s football history but also capped another impressive performance from the experienced forward.

Later in the game, Lukaku also provided an assist for Alexis Saelemaekers, who scored Belgium’s fifth and final goal.

Belgium dominate New Zealand from start to finish

Belgium controlled the match from the opening whistle and barely allowed New Zealand any opportunities in the first half.

The Red Devils nearly earned an early penalty after Leandro Trossard’s shot struck Finn Surman’s arm. However, the referee overturned the decision following a VAR review.

Belgium eventually took the lead in the 28th minute when Trossard reacted quickest inside the penalty area and finished from close range.

Leandro Trossard shines with two goals

The Arsenal winger continued his excellent performance shortly after the break.

Although goalkeeper Max Crocombe saved his first effort, Trossard calmly converted the rebound with an acrobatic finish to double Belgium’s advantage.

His brace played a key role in Belgium’s comfortable victory.

Kevin De Bruyne adds another stunning goal

Belgium extended their lead through captain Kevin De Bruyne, who scored with a brilliant curling effort from outside the penalty area.

The Manchester City midfielder found space after another impressive run by Trossard before placing his shot beyond the goalkeeper.

The goal effectively ended any hopes of a New Zealand comeback.

New Zealand score, but Belgium finish strongly

New Zealand managed to pull one goal back through Elijah Just, giving their fans a brief moment to celebrate.

However, Belgium responded almost immediately.

Lukaku headed home Belgium’s fourth goal before setting up Alexis Saelemaekers, who completed the 5-1 victory in the closing moments.

Belgium finish top of Group G

The convincing win ensured Belgium finished at the top of Group G, carrying strong momentum into the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

With Lukaku in record-breaking form and Belgium’s attack firing on all cylinders, the Red Devils will head into the next round full of confidence as they continue their bid for World Cup glory.
