June 2, 2025: Reigning world champion D Gukesh scored a historic victory over Magnus Carlsen in Round 6 of the Norway Chess 2025 tournament, defeating the world No. 1 for the first time in a classical game. The 19-year-old Indian grandmaster avenged his opening-round loss against the five-time world champion in a dramatic turnaround that unfolded over 62 moves and more than four hours of high-stakes chess.

Gukesh, who had appeared to be on the backfoot for most of the game, stunned spectators and Carlsen alike with a remarkable comeback, earning three crucial points. This victory propels him to third place on the leaderboard with 8.5 points, just one point behind co-leaders Carlsen and American Fabiano Caruana.
While Gukesh refrained from speaking to the media after the match, his coach, Polish grandmaster Grzegorz Gajewski, emphasized the importance of this win. “It gives a huge pump of confidence. Once you’ve done it, you know you can do it again. And that’s the plan,” Gajewski said.
