Boxing legend and ex-husband trade sharp allegations over money, sacrifices and marriage roles

January 15, 2026: Indian boxing icon Mary Kom has found herself in the spotlight for controversial reasons as her public feud with ex-husband Karung Onler intensifies. In a recent interview, Mary alleged that Onler made no sacrifices during their marriage and claimed she was the sole breadwinner, accusing him of not earning anything when they tied the knot. The five-time world champion further alleged that while she worked tirelessly in the boxing ring, her bank account was drained, saying she later discovered her savings were nearly empty.

Responding to the claims, Onler strongly refuted Mary’s allegations and presented a contrasting version of events. He said he was a contracted football player with Shillong’s Excise and Customs department and was preparing for UPSC exams when they met. Onler claimed he gave up his career at Mary’s request to support her boxing ambitions and raise their children while she travelled for competitions. He also dismissed accusations about wasting money on elections, stating that Mary herself encouraged him to contest after her Rajya Sabha term ended.

Onler acknowledged that their marriage did not follow conventional gender roles but stressed that his support came from love, not financial dependence. He said he managed the household, cared for the children and stood by Mary’s career, adding that he felt hurt by remarks that discredited his contribution. While confirming that the couple has obtained a divorce through customary proceedings, Onler urged that his role in Mary Kom’s journey not be dismissed, calling the public accusations deeply disrespectful.
