January 1, 2024: Glenn McGrath has expressed his hope that Mitchell Starc will be fit to play in the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), starting January 3, 2025.
Australia claimed an 184-run victory in the Melbourne Test, taking a 2-1 lead in the series, and also sealed India’s fate in the race for the World Test Championship Final at Lord’s next year. Despite the win, the Australian pacer faced fitness concerns, particularly related to his upper body, during the match. On Day 3, Starc was seen clutching his back while bowling, showing signs of discomfort. However, he continued to bowl at full pace on Day 5 to help Australia defend a challenging target of 340 runs, contributing to India being bowled out for 155.
In a conversation at the SCG, McGrath praised Starc’s importance to the Australian team, acknowledging his struggles but also expressing confidence in Starc’s determination. “It will be up to Mitch and the powers to be (whether he plays). He will be doing everything possible to be out in the middle. He is such a massive part of this Australian team, and when he is on fire, he is as good as anyone going around. He’s been bowling incredibly well. Fingers crossed he has pulled up well and can get through this Test,” McGrath said, as quoted by Fox Sports.
McGrath further emphasized how vital Starc is to the team, especially when he is bowling at his best. “Australia will want to go in with their best team… I hope Mitchell Starc is out there come day one,” McGrath added.
With Starc being a pivotal figure in the Australian bowling attack, his fitness will be crucial as the team looks to finish the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series on a strong note and possibly secure a series victory. The final Test at the SCG promises to be a thrilling encounter as both teams battle it out for supremacy in the highly competitive series.
Pat Cummins, Australia’s captain, had an exceptional all-round performance in the Melbourne Test, contributing both with the bat and ball. He was named ‘Player of the Match’ for his instrumental role in the victory.
The fifth and final Test will begin on January 3, and both teams will be eager to put on a spectacular show.
