Michael Vaughan on India’s BGT Defeat: “Blown Away After Perth Triumph

Former England Captain Analyzes India’s Collapse in Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 After Promising Start

New Delhi, January 6: Former England captain Michael Vaughan shared his thoughts on the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, stating that India was “blown away” after their impressive victory in the opening Test at Perth. Despite starting the series on a high, India succumbed to a 1-3 defeat, marking Australia’s first BGT triumph in a decade since their last victory in the 2014-15 season.

Virat Kohli, one of India’s key players, endured a disappointing series, managing just 190 runs in eight innings at an average of 23.75. The star batter was dismissed four times by Scott Boland, highlighting India’s struggles against Australia’s pace attack.

Speaking on the Club Prairie Fire Podcast, Vaughan reflected on the series dynamics and credited Australia for dominating the final three Tests.

“India won the first game in Perth, played great. Since then, they’ve been blown away, really… You’ve got to say this series, as much as it’s been brilliant cricket, a lot of it, particularly the last three games, has been very one-sided. Australia has managed to get the upper hand and play some great cricket, and India have not been able to find a way of throwing a punch back. They’ve thrown a shoulder barge back, but they haven’t been able to throw a punch back,” Vaughan remarked.

In the final Sydney Test, after winning the toss and opting to bat, India faltered once again. Scott Boland’s lethal bowling spells and Beau Webster’s composed debut performance kept Australia in control throughout the match.

On Day 3, Australia chased down 162 runs comfortably, securing a six-wicket victory to seal the series 3-1.

Vaughan’s analysis underscores India’s inability to counter Australia’s strategic gameplay and consistent execution across the series. With this win, Australia not only reclaimed the Border-Gavaskar Trophy but also made a strong statement in the ongoing World Test Championship cycle.
