Mithun Manhas reflects on revival after maiden final berth
February 18, 2026: Mithun Manhas turned emotional as Jammu and Kashmir cricket team reached their first-ever Ranji Trophy final, defeating Bengal cricket team by six wickets in the semifinal at Kalyani. Manhas, who took charge as an administrator of the crisis-hit Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association in 2021, recalled how former BCCI secretary Jay Shah gave him a free hand to restore order in a system plagued by allegations of mismanagement. He credited structural reforms and a transparent cricket committee for laying the foundation of the team’s success.
Manhas highlighted the role of Brigadier Anil Gupta and the talent hunt programme that unearthed players like left-arm seamer Sunil Kumar. He also pointed to infrastructure upgrades, including red and black soil pitches at Srinagar’s Harbux Stadium and the Jammu College ground, as key steps in preparing the side to compete nationally. Drawing from his own first-class experience with Delhi, Manhas emphasised the importance of professionalism and proper preparation, including early practice tours ahead of major matches.
A major boost came from roping in veteran domestic batter Paras Dogra as captain and former India player Ajay Sharma as head coach, moves Manhas described as crucial for stability and experience. He also praised pace spearhead Auqib Nabi, calling him a match-winner who is “knocking on the doors” of the national team. While refraining from commenting on selection matters, Manhas said the team’s remarkable rise reflects years of rebuilding and belief.
