Mohammed Shami Alimony Order: Calcutta High Court Directs Cricketer to Pay ₹4 Lakh Monthly to Wife and Daughter
Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami has been directed by the Calcutta High Court to pay a total of ₹4 lakh per month to his estranged wife Hasin Jahan and their daughter, significantly increasing the previous amount mandated by a lower court. The order was issued on July 1 by Justice Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee, in response to a plea filed by Jahan seeking a revision of an earlier ruling.
As per the court’s directive, Shami is required to pay ₹1.5 lakh to his wife and ₹2.5 lakh to their daughter on a monthly basis.
“In my considered opinion, a sum of ₹1,50,000 per month to the petitioner no.1 (wife) and ₹2,50,000 to her daughter would be just, fair, and reasonable to ensure financial stability for both the petitioners,” the court stated in its order.
Additionally, the bench clarified that while these amounts are legally mandated, Shami is free to voluntarily contribute to additional expenses, such as his daughter’s education or other needs, beyond the fixed monthly amounts.
The ruling came after Hasin Jahan challenged a district sessions court order from 2023, which had directed Shami to pay only ₹50,000 per month to her and ₹80,000 to their daughter. Dissatisfied with that decision, Jahan moved the high court, seeking an enhanced monthly compensation of ₹7 lakh for herself and ₹3 lakh for their daughter.
The court, after reviewing the petition and financial details, ruled that ₹4 lakh in total would be a “fair and reasonable” amount in light of the child’s welfare and Jahan’s financial needs.
Hasin Jahan, a former model and cheerleader for the Kolkata Knight Riders, married Shami in 2014, and the couple had their daughter in 2015. However, their marriage has been marred by legal disputes and public controversy.
In 2018, Jahan accused Shami of domestic violence, dowry harassment, and match-fixing, claiming he had received money from a Pakistani woman and had stopped providing financial support for her and their child.
The accusations led to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) putting Shami’s central contract on hold temporarily. After an internal probe, the BCCI cleared Shami of match-fixing allegations, but the personal and legal battle between the two continued in the courts.
The Mohammed Shami alimony order sets a new financial precedent in the case, signaling judicial support for the welfare of both the estranged spouse and the child in high-profile celebrity cases. Whether Shami chooses to appeal or voluntarily contribute further, as the court noted, remains to be seen.
As of now, the Indian pacer, who played a crucial role in India’s 2023 ODI World Cup campaign, is facing this ongoing legal challenge off the field while balancing his professional career.
