March 29, 2025: In a remarkable achievement on Friday, former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni surpassed his former teammate Suresh Raina to become the highest run-scorer in the history of the franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The milestone was reached during the eighth match of the 2024 IPL season, held at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Dhoni, the wicketkeeper-batter, made his mark with a brilliant unbeaten knock of 30 runs off just 16 balls, boasting an impressive strike rate of 187.5. His innings included three boundaries and two sixes, helping him overtake Raina’s long-standing record. With this knock, Dhoni raised his total IPL runs for CSK to 4699 runs from 204 innings, with an average of 40.50 and a strike rate of 139.43.

Before retiring from the sport, Raina had accumulated 4687 runs in 171 innings for the franchise, a record that Dhoni has now surpassed. Notably, Faf Du Plessis, who previously captained CSK, is now with Royal Challengers Bangalore as their vice-captain. Both Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ravindra Jadeja, who continue to play for CSK, are also among the top run-scorers for the team.
