Punjab Police officials were dismissed for absenteeism and refusal to provide security for the ICC Champions Trophy.
February 26, 2025: In a major crackdown on negligence, over 100 Punjab Police officials in Pakistan have been dismissed from service after refusing to carry out security duties during the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The officers, who were responsible for ensuring the safety of teams traveling between Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, and their designated hotels, were either absent from duty or refused to take up their responsibilities, according to police sources.
Punjab Inspector General Usman Anwar ordered strict action against the officers, emphasizing that there is no room for negligence in international events.
"Security during an international tournament is a matter of national responsibility. Any lapse in duty is unacceptable," a senior Punjab Police official stated.

While an official reason for the refusals has not been provided, local media reports suggest that excessive duty hours and exhaustion were key factors in the mass absenteeism. The move comes amidst Pakistan’s disappointing Champions Trophy campaign, which saw the host nation eliminated after consecutive defeats to New Zealand and India.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Federal Information Minister, Attaullah Tarar, has dismissed concerns over a terror threat to the Champions Trophy, stating that the tournament is being hosted smoothly with full security arrangements.
"Pakistan is peacefully and successfully hosting the ICC Champions Trophy. Our grounds are full, and fans from all over the world are celebrating the spirit of cricket," he told Geo News.
Despite the reassurances, the dismissal of over 100 security personnel raises concerns about the management of security arrangements for future international events in Pakistan.
