In a major blow to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif formally confirmed on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, that Pakistan will boycott its group-stage match against India. While the national team has been cleared to travel and compete in the rest of the tournament, they will not take the field for the high-profile fixture scheduled for February 15 at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

Solidarity with Bangladesh: The Reason Behind the Move

Addressing the federal cabinet in Islamabad, Sharif described the boycott as a “clear stand” taken after careful deliberation. He framed the decision as a gesture of solidarity with Bangladesh, which was recently replaced in the tournament by Scotland.

  • The Security Dispute: The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had refused to play its matches in India, citing security concerns. When the ICC rejected their request to move those fixtures to Sri Lanka and instead replaced the team, Pakistan accused the governing body of “double standards.”
  • The Stand: “We have taken this stand after deliberating on it carefully,” Sharif stated, adding paradoxically that “politics should have no place in sports” even as the government maintains its intervention.

ICC Warns of “Dampening Consequences”

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has reacted with “serious concern,” noting that selective participation undermines the integrity of a global event.

  • Revenue at Risk: The India-Pakistan clash is the biggest revenue generator in cricket. Broadcasters could face losses between $250 million and $400 million due to the cancellation, potentially leading to legal action against the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
  • Sanctions: The ICC has hinted at punitive measures, which could include withholding Pakistan’s annual revenue share, docking World Test Championship points, or even suspending the PCB’s membership.
  • The Walkover: According to ICC regulations, for a match to be officially forfeited, one team must fail to appear for the toss. India’s captain, Suryakumar Yadav, is expected to follow protocol and walk out at the scheduled time; if Pakistan is absent, India will be awarded two points and a walkover victory.

Group A Implications

Pakistan is placed in Group A alongside India, Namibia, the Netherlands, and the USA. By forfeiting the India match, the Salman Ali Agha-led squad starts the tournament with a significant points deficit and a potential hit to their Net Run Rate (NRR), complicating their path to the Super 8s.
