February 21, 2025: Australian skipper Pat Cummins, who missed several crucial fixtures for his country due to personal and injury reasons, is eyeing a return to competitive cricket during the Indian Premier League (IPL). The 30-year-old, who is currently recovering from an ankle injury sustained during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, is hopeful that the upcoming IPL season will help him regain match fitness ahead of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final against South Africa in June.
Cummins, who has been focused on rehab and managing his injury, missed Australia’s final ICC WTC tour and the Champions Trophy due to the birth of his second child and the ankle issue. Despite being unable to compete in key fixtures, he remains confident that playing in the IPL will serve as adequate preparation for his return to international cricket.

The Sunrisers Hyderabad captain is set to return to IPL action on March 22, and he believes the physical demands of the T20 tournament will help him ease back into competitive cricket. His primary goal is to return to full fitness and play a pivotal role in the WTC final and the subsequent Test series in the West Indies.
Speaking to cricket.com.au, Cummins provided an update on his recovery, explaining that the injury, although not long-term, required rest and gradual recovery. He is hopeful that the break will set him up for a busy cricketing year ahead.
“Physically, it’s quite a nice build-up for the World Test Championship final,” Cummins said about the IPL. He further noted that playing four overs in T20 cricket would allow him to gradually build his fitness. He is confident that with a few more weeks of rehab, he will be ready to take on the demands of the IPL and then focus on the Test series to follow.
Cummins also spoke fondly about the time spent with his family after the birth of his second child, Edi, in early February. He mentioned the joy of being fully present for his family, adding, “It has been really special.”
As he gears up for his return to cricket, Cummins is focused on regaining full fitness and preparing for his leadership role in Australia’s upcoming international fixtures.
