March 18, 2025: Special Olympics Bharat hosted a heartfelt welcome ceremony on Monday for the Indian athletes who returned from the 2025 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Turin, Italy, following their historic performance. The contingent of 30 athletes and 19 support staff members had a memorable campaign, bringing home 33 medals—8 gold, 18 silver, and 7 bronze—across six disciplines: alpine skiing, snowboarding, floorball, snowshoeing, short track speed skating, and cross-country skiing.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared his immense pride in the athletes’ accomplishments, posting pictures with the players he met and expressing joy for their achievements. He tweeted, “I am immensely proud of our athletes who have brought glory to the nation at the Special Olympics World Winter Games held in Turin, Italy! Our incredible contingent has brought home 33 medals. Met the contingent in Parliament and congratulated them for their accomplishments.”

The welcome ceremony, which was held at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, was graced by dignitaries including the Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Raksha Khadse, and the President of Special Olympics Bharat, Mallika Nadda. Special Olympics Bharat athlete Bharti, who won two gold medals at the tournament, also joined the dignitaries on stage.

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has also announced an increase in cash prizes for the medal winners as a gesture of appreciation for their hard work and dedication. Gold medallists will receive Rs 20 lakh, while silver and bronze medallists will be awarded Rs 14 lakh and Rs 8 lakh, respectively.

This event serves as a reminder of the incredible achievements of athletes with intellectual disabilities and their ability to inspire others through sports. Their success continues to shine a light on the importance of inclusion and support in the world of sports.
