PSG Wins Big, But Celebrations Turn Violent in Paris, Nearly 300 Arrests Reported

June 1, 2025: Thousands of jubilant Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) fans took to the streets of Paris on Saturday night after the club secured a dominant 5-0 victory over Inter Milan in the Champions League final in Munich. The win marked PSG’s first-ever European club football title, igniting citywide celebrations that quickly turned chaotic in some areas.

Approximately 48,000 fans gathered at Parc des Princes, while others packed the iconic Champs-Élysées to watch and celebrate the historic triumph. Supporters were seen singing, dancing, waving PSG flags, and sounding horns late into the night. One fan, 20-year-old Clement, summed up the mood: “It’s so good and so deserved! We’ve struggled, but this year we had a team that played for each other, not just stars.”

Despite the overall celebratory tone, tensions flared in various locations. Paris police reported nearly 300 arrests, citing offenses such as possession of fireworks, disorderly conduct, and resisting authority. Authorities deployed water cannons to disperse crowds attempting to approach the Arc de Triomphe, where troublemakers reportedly hurled fireworks and objects at officers.

Outside the capital, tragedy struck in Grenoble, where a car drove into a group of celebrating PSG fans, injuring four members of the same family, two of them seriously. The driver later turned himself in and was arrested. According to a source close to the investigation, the act appeared to be unintentional.

French President Emmanuel Macron congratulated the team via a post on X (formerly Twitter), calling it a “day of glory for PSG” and adding, “Paris is the capital of Europe tonight.” Macron is also expected to host the PSG squad on Sunday at the Élysée Palace. Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo called the win “historic” and praised the team’s resilience.

A victory parade along the Champs-Élysées is scheduled for Sunday, with tens of thousands expected to attend, even as law enforcement prepares for potential disruptions. The win not only marks a new era for PSG but also places the French capital firmly back in the global football spotlight.
