Rajeev Shukla To Replace Roger Binny As BCCI President: Here’s Why?

June 2, 2025: Veteran cricket administrator Rajeev Shukla is set to take over as the interim president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) after current chief Roger Binny reaches the mandatory age limit next month, sources confirmed on Monday.

Binny, who became BCCI president in 2022 succeeding Sourav Ganguly, will turn 70 on July 19. The age limit for holding an office-bearer position in BCCI is 70, which necessitates his stepping down from the role. As per BCCI convention, the senior-most office bearer assumes charge in such situations.

Currently serving as BCCI vice-president since 2020, 65-year-old Rajeev Shukla will fill in as acting president until the BCCI holds fresh elections during its Annual General Meeting scheduled for September.

A source close to the board stated, “He (Shukla) will perform that role until fresh elections are held in September.” The BCCI had seen a similar interim arrangement when C K Khanna served as acting president from 2017 to 2019 during the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators’ rule.

Roger Binny’s cricketing credentials include being a key member of India’s 1983 World Cup-winning team under Kapil Dev. Post-retirement, he also coached the India Under-19 team to victory in the 2000 ICC World Cup for that age category. Before his presidency at BCCI, Binny headed the Karnataka State Cricket Association.

Rajeev Shukla, apart from his long-standing association with cricket administration, is a Rajya Sabha MP from the Congress party and has previously chaired the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The BCCI’s leadership transition marks a significant moment as the board gears up for elections that will chart the course for Indian cricket’s future governance.
