Ravi Shastri Backs Hazlewood Over This Bowler For WTC Final At Lord’s, Says ‘His Experience In English Conditions Is Crucial’

April 25, 2025: Former India head coach and cricket legend Ravi Shastri has weighed in on Australia’s fast-bowling conundrum ahead of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final against South Africa at Lord’s. With a stacked pace attack featuring Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Scott Boland, Australia will face a tough call when choosing three quicks for the one-off Test. According to Shastri, if Hazlewood is fully fit, he should get the nod over Boland.

Speaking to the ICC, Shastri pointed to Hazlewood’s experience and mastery of English conditions—particularly the unique slope at Lord’s—as key advantages.

“It will be a very tough choice, but if Hazlewood is fit, then he gets the nod ahead of Boland,” Shastri said. “If Hazlewood is fit to do that, he will definitely get the nod for two reasons. One, the English conditions. Two, Lord’s with the slope.”

Shastri even drew a comparison between Hazlewood and former Aussie great Glenn McGrath, noting the similarities in their bowling styles and how McGrath thrived at Lord’s.

“Hazlewood is most likened to Glenn McGrath. And you’ve got to just check McGrath’s record at Lord’s, especially bowling from the Commentary Box end. He could be lethal with the ball either seaming back or going away, and Hazlewood can do something similar with his height,” he added.

Hazlewood, 34, had been sidelined from several major assignments, including three Tests in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Australia’s tour of Sri Lanka, and the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025, due to recurring calf issues. However, he has made a strong return in the ongoing IPL 2025, taking 16 wickets in nine games for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, a sign that he’s regaining rhythm and fitness.

The WTC Final, to be played at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground, is set to be a high-stakes encounter with both Australia and South Africa eyeing the coveted Test mace. If Hazlewood makes the XI, his form and familiarity with English conditions could prove vital in Australia’s bid to retain their WTC crown.
