Red Sox Could Trade Jarren Duran in Three-Team Blockbuster for Pitcher

July 25, 2025: The Boston Red Sox are looking to bolster their pitching rotation ahead of the trade deadline, and a new proposed three-team deal involving Jarren Duran could be the answer. Despite Duran being an All-Star last season, his declining numbers and the emergence of other outfield talent like Raman Anthony, Ceddanne Rafaela (who recently signed an extension), and Wilyer Abreu make him a prime trade candidate.

The Athletic’s Jim Bowden has put forward an intriguing trade proposal that could benefit the Red Sox, Miami Marlins, and San Diego Padres:

The Proposed Three-Team Deal:
Red Sox Receive: Right-Handed Pitcher Edward Cabrera (from Marlins)

Padres Receive: Outfielder Jarren Duran (from Red Sox)

Marlins Receive: Catcher Ethan Salas (Padres’ No. 2 prospect) and Right-Handed Pitcher Luis Perales (Red Sox’s No. 9 prospect)

Bowden highlights that Edward Cabrera would provide the Red Sox with a much-needed “solid starter” to complement Garrett Crochet, Brayan Bello, and Lucas Giolito. Cabrera boasts a 3.48 ERA over 17 starts this season, with 92 strikeouts in 88 innings. However, the Red Sox would need to thoroughly review Cabrera’s medical reports, as the 27-year-old recently had an MRI on his right elbow and has a history of injuries. Cabrera is under team control through the 2028 season, aligning with Boston’s desire for controlled assets rather than rental pitchers.

The Marlins, facing the possibility of Cabrera seeking a significant five-year, $63 million deal in free agency, could wisely cash in on him while he’s healthy. They have no immediate need for Duran, but the Padres are in clear pursuit of outfield help, making Duran a fitting acquisition for them. While the Red Sox would ideally covet a top prospect like Ethan Salas, the Padres’ pitching needs don’t align directly with what Boston is offering. This multi-team scenario appears to be a creative solution to meet each team’s specific demands at the trade deadline.
