Rishabh Pant’s Injury Casts Shadow Over India’s Day 1 Performance in Manchester Test

Concerns Mount as Wicketkeeper-Batter Undergoes Scans After Painful Blow to Foot; Sudharsan Expresses Worry for India’s Batting Future

Manchester [UK], July 24: A palpable hush fell over the Indian camp on Day 1 of the Manchester Test as star wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant was forced to retire hurt, leaving a worrying cloud hanging over the team’s strong start. Pant, who had been looking perfectly in control during his promising innings of 37, was struck hard on his right foot by a sharp delivery from England’s Chris Woakes.

The immediate aftermath was clear: Pant was in visible discomfort. The swelling on his foot was quite noticeable, there was a bit of bleeding, and he could barely stand. His sudden departure from the field, especially considering the fluent form he seemed to be in, understandably raised significant concerns among both fans watching and his teammates in the dressing room.

At the post-day press conference, young left-hander Sai Sudharsan, who himself scored a valuable half-century, provided a brief update on Pant’s condition.

“He was in a lot of pain definitely,” Sudharsan admitted, his concern evident. “But they’ve gone for scans. We’ll get to know overnight, probably get the information tomorrow.”

The young batter also acknowledged the potential impact of Pant’s absence on India’s prospects in the crucial Test match. “Obviously, because he was batting really well today as well,” Sudharsan continued. “Plus, we’ll miss a batter if he doesn’t come back again. So, it will definitely have consequences.”

Meanwhile, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also issued a brief statement on their official X handle, confirming the situation and reassuring fans that Pant was receiving medical attention.

The BCCI’s update read: “Update: Rishabh Pant was hit on his right foot while batting on Day 1 of the Manchester Test. He was taken for scans from the stadium. The BCCI Medical Team is monitoring his progress.”

All eyes will now be on the medical report to determine the severity of Pant’s injury and whether he will be able to take further part in this pivotal Test match.
