Rohit Sharma Calls India’s Win In T20 World Cup 2024 Final A ‘MIRACLE’

Rohit Sharma, who led India to their second T20 World Cup title in June 2024, called the team’s victory a “miracle,” and—after being named the tournament ambassador for the 2026 edition—expressed his singular wish to see India successfully defend their title at home.

November 26, 2025: Speaking at an ICC event in Mumbai on Tuesday, former T20I captain Rohit Sharma opened up about the emotional rollercoaster of leading India to the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup title, their first ICC Men’s trophy in 11 years.

Rohit, who retired from T20 Internationals immediately after the final win over South Africa, described the victory as nothing short of a divine intervention, especially given the team’s emotional journey following the 2023 ODI World Cup final loss.

Rohit Sharma: “With that final (2023 ODI World Cup) in Ahmedabad, God has been very kind, and we went on to win the finals. From the position we were in, and to go on and win that final after that, it was truly a miracle, and then 8 months later, India go on to win another ICC trophy. So I am pretty happy with that.”

From Player to Ambassador

Rohit’s career has been defined by the T20 World Cup. He was a member of the winning squad in the inaugural 2007 edition under MS Dhoni and, 17 years later, became the captain to lead the side to its second title.

His contributions in the 2024 campaign were pivotal, notably his blistering 92 off 41 balls against Australia in the Super Eights and his crucial 57 off 39 against England in the semi-final. In the final, India defeated South Africa by seven runs in a thrilling finish, largely due to clutch performances from Virat Kohli (76 runs), Jasprit Bumrah, and Hardik Pandya.

The Mumbai event where Rohit spoke also served to announce him as the Tournament Ambassador for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, which will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.

Focus on the 2026 Defence

When asked to pick his two finalists for the 2026 tournament, Rohit placed his faith squarely in the defending champions.

“Obviously I want India to be in the finals. Can’t really put my fingers on another team and say this and that. India playing the final against any team and India coming out on top is what I would love to see, and I’m pretty sure… I don’t care about the opposition, to be honest. I prefer India to be there, and then let’s see what happens,” he stated.

Now transitioning to the role of an observer and guide, Rohit’s focus is on seeing the next generation of Indian players, led by captain Suryakumar Yadav, successfully defend the title on home soil, proving that the 2024 triumph was the start of a new era of dominance.
