Rohit Sharma To Retire From All Formats Of Cricket? Retirement Speculations Gain Momentum

“Adam Gilchrist hints at full retirement post-Champions Trophy 2025, with debates over India’s next Test captain intensifying.”

January 9, 2025: Rohit Sharma, India’s Test captain, faces mounting speculations about his future in international cricket. Following a poor performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25, where India failed to win a single Test and Rohit managed just 31 runs across five games, whispers about his retirement from Test cricket have grown louder.

Adding fuel to the fire, Rohit’s former IPL captain at Deccan Chargers, Adam Gilchrist, hinted that the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 might mark the end of his international cricket career altogether.

Speaking on the Club Prairie Fire podcast, Gilchrist said, “I don’t see Rohit going to England [for the Test series in 2025]. I think he’ll probably have a crack at the Champions Trophy, and that might be it for him. He’ll likely assess things when he gets home to his two-month-old baby, which might also influence his decision.”

Debates Over India’s Next Test Captain
As Rohit’s potential retirement looms, the conversation shifts to India’s future leadership. Gilchrist proposed an interesting contender: Virat Kohli, who previously led India to numerous Test victories. “I wouldn’t be surprised if Virat wouldn’t mind doing it again. However, making Jasprit Bumrah the full-time captain might be challenging,” Gilchrist added.

In contrast, Michael Vaughan, the former England skipper, backed Bumrah for the captaincy role while also advocating for Shubman Gill as vice-captain. “Bumrah’s performances in Australia’s Perth and SCG Tests showed his leadership potential. If he hadn’t been injured, India could have won those games. I’d have someone like Shubman Gill as vice-captain to groom him for the future,” Vaughan stated.

India’s next Test assignment, a five-match tour of England, is scheduled to begin on June 20, 2025. The team’s captaincy and squad selection are likely to dominate discussions leading up to the series.
