Rohit Sharma Will Remain India's Captain Till ICC Champions Trophy

January 12, 2025: Rohit Sharma's tenure as the Indian cricket team captain is set to last until the ICC Champions Trophy in February-March 2025, as per sources within the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). However, discussions are already underway regarding the possibility of Jasprit Bumrah succeeding him as captain.

Under Rohit's leadership, India has enjoyed both highs and lows. Notable achievements include a 10-match winning streak during the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup, which ended with a loss to Australia in the final. The team also won the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup in Barbados and made it to the final of the 2023 ICC World Test Championship, though they lost to Australia. However, Rohit's recent form and leadership have been under scrutiny. Since the second half of 2024, his batting has struggled, with a notably poor record in the 2024/25 Test season. He managed only 164 runs in eight matches against Bangladesh and Australia, and his captaincy faced setbacks as India suffered significant losses, including a whitewash by New Zealand in a home Test series.

India's next major challenge is the ICC Champions Trophy, to be held in Pakistan and the UAE from February 19 to March 9, 2025. India will face off against Bangladesh in their first match on February 20, followed by the high-stakes encounter with Pakistan on February 23. The eight-team tournament will take place in a hybrid format, with some matches hosted in Pakistan and others in Dubai. The final will be held in Lahore on March 9, unless India qualifies, in which case it will be moved to Dubai. This prestigious tournament will feature the top eight teams from the 2023 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup, with each side vying for the coveted Champions Trophy title.
