Mumbai: Rohit Sharma’s much-anticipated return to the Ranji Trophy after a decade ended in disappointment as he was dismissed for just three runs off 19 balls on Day 1 of Mumbai’s match against Jammu & Kashmir. The Indian captain’s form has been a cause for concern as he prepares to lead the team in the upcoming ODI series against England and the Champions Trophy.
Playing at the Mumbai Cricket Association’s Sharad Pawar Academy in BKC, Rohit’s innings lasted barely half an hour. Facing J&K pacer Umar Nazir on a lively pitch, Rohit was dismissed in the sixth over after mistiming a pull shot, resulting in a simple catch to J&K skipper Paras Dogra at mid-off. This dismissal marks the third time this season that Rohit has fallen to a similar shot, with previous dismissals against New Zealand’s Matt Henry and Australia’s Pat Cummins.

Mumbai’s decision to include Rohit and other Indian stars in the lineup came at the cost of dropping in-form opener Ayush Mhatre, who has scored 408 runs in five matches, including two centuries in his debut Ranji season. However, Rohit’s return failed to provide the spark Mumbai hoped for.

The 37-year-old has struggled to find form in recent months, with a string of poor performances in the home Test series against New Zealand and the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. As India’s skipper across formats, his current struggles raise questions about his readiness for the Champions Trophy and other crucial assignments.
For Rohit, the search for runs continues, and he will look to make amends in the second innings of this Ranji Trophy match. However, the pressure is mounting, with national selectors and fans hoping for a turnaround soon.
