Pakistan Cricketer Salman Mirza Sends Legal Notice Over ‘False Misconduct’ Reports During T20 World Cup
Pakistan cricketer Salman Mirza has issued legal notices to several media outlets over what he described as false and defamatory reports alleging inappropriate behaviour during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
The controversy began after some reports claimed that Mirza was involved in misconduct with a woman while the Pakistan team was staying in Sri Lanka during the tournament. The reports suggested that the alleged incident involved a hotel staff member and hinted at a formal complaint against the player.
However, both Mirza and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) have strongly denied the allegations, calling them baseless and misleading. In response, the cricketer has sent legal notices demanding an immediate retraction of the reports and warning of further legal action if the claims are not corrected.
In a statement shared on social media, Mirza described the allegations as “absurd” and said irresponsible reporting can seriously damage a player’s reputation and career. He emphasised that no credible evidence supports the claims and that the stories circulating in the media are completely unverified.
The PCB also condemned the reports, terming them malicious and irresponsible. The board clarified that while the team management had imposed a minor disciplinary fine internally, the situation was misrepresented in media coverage, which exaggerated the issue and created false allegations.
The incident has once again highlighted the challenges athletes face under intense public and media scrutiny during major international tournaments like the T20 World Cup. Rumours and speculation can spread quickly during such high-profile events, sometimes leading to serious reputational damage.
Pakistan’s campaign in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 ended earlier than expected in the Super 8 stage, but the off-field controversy has since drawn widespread attention and sparked debate about journalistic responsibility in sports reporting.
