Shikhar Dhawan Compares Captaincy Styles of MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli

February 12, 2025: In a revealing interview, former Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan shared his insights on the contrasting leadership styles of India’s celebrated captains, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Virat Kohli. Dhawan, who played under both captains and witnessed the evolution of Indian cricket, elaborated on their unique approaches that propelled India to unprecedented heights.

Dhawan fondly recalled Dhoni’s calm and composed leadership, highlighting how the former captain’s relaxed demeanor and wealth of experience allowed the team to perform at its best. He emphasized that Dhoni’s leadership was characterized by minimal communication, yet his presence was powerful, and his ability to remain calm, even in intense moments, stood out. According to Dhawan, Dhoni’s strength lay in his quiet yet formidable approach to leadership, which earned respect without ever raising his voice.

Under Dhoni’s leadership, India achieved remarkable successes, including winning the 2007 T20 World Cup, the 2011 ODI World Cup, and the 2013 Champions Trophy, among other notable series. Dhawan appreciated the way Dhoni handled pressure, noting that despite never shouting or displaying anger, his leadership had an undeniable impact, and his “scary” gaze was enough to instill discipline within the team.

When Virat Kohli took over the captaincy, Dhawan noticed a sharp contrast in style. Kohli, known for his intensity and aggression, brought a new level of energy to the team. Dhawan explained how Kohli’s emphasis on fitness and high standards revolutionized India’s approach to the game, especially in Test cricket. The team’s aggressive attitude, combined with a focus on fitness, helped India dominate in all formats. Dhawan acknowledged that Kohli’s leadership, particularly in Tests, helped India achieve new milestones, including topping the ICC Test rankings for 42 consecutive months.

Dhawan also noted that while Kohli’s intensity made him stand out, it was his continuous growth as a captain that contributed to India’s successes. Under Kohli’s leadership, India developed a fierce competitive spirit and a mentality focused on excellence, which reshaped Indian cricket.

Both Dhoni and Kohli had different approaches, but Dhawan praised both for their contributions to India’s rise as a cricketing powerhouse.
