Shivam Dube Shines in Asia Cup Opener, Credits Gambhir and Surya for Confidence Ahead of Pakistan Clash
Dubai, September 11 – For Shivam Dube, the Asia Cup opener against the UAE was more than just a game—it was a statement. With a brilliant spell of 3/4 in just two overs, the all-rounder set the tone for India’s dominant start and reminded everyone of his growing value to the team. Alongside Kuldeep Yadav’s devastating 4/7, Dube ensured UAE never stood a chance as they crumbled to 57 all out in 13.1 overs.
Chasing a modest target, Abhishek Sharma (30 off 16 balls) and vice-captain Shubman Gill (20 off 9 balls)* made light work of it, powering India to victory in just 4.3 overs—a ruthless finish that underlined India’s hunger.
But for Dube, the game carried a deeper meaning.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Dube credited his success to the faith shown in him by captain Suryakumar Yadav and head coach Gautam Gambhir.
“Captain and coach had told me earlier that I would get to bowl, and I have their confidence. My bowling coach had given me specific tips, and I was preparing myself accordingly. These preparations paid off today. It always feels special when you perform for your country,” Dube said, his voice filled with pride.
The all-rounder also shed light on the technical work he has been doing with bowling coach Morne Morkel, particularly on his slower deliveries and run-up adjustments.
“This has improved my rhythm, pace, and overall confidence,” he explained. “I am happy that the results showed today.”
When asked if this match served as a “warm-up” ahead of India’s blockbuster clash with Pakistan on Sunday, Dube dismissed the notion outright.
“Whenever we play for India, no game is a warm-up. Every match in the Blue jersey is important. We take pride in representing our country. Today was special because we returned to international action after a while, and it felt really good,” he said firmly.
The conversation naturally drifted to comparisons with Hardik Pandya, India’s other pace-bowling all-rounder. Dube brushed off comparisons, instead emphasizing his respect for Pandya.
“Hardik is like a brother to me. He has immense experience, and I try to learn as much as I can from him. I do not think about comparisons—I just focus on improving myself with whatever I learn from him,” Dube stated.
Reflecting on the wicket, Dube noted that the pitch was slow and slightly sticky, hinting that spin might play a bigger role in upcoming games.
“It hasn’t been used much. I feel it will spin more and behave differently as the tournament progresses. That’s good for us,” he concluded.
With bowlers firing, batters finishing clinically, and youngsters like Dube rising to the occasion, India’s campaign has kicked off in dream fashion. The victory was comprehensive, but it was also a reminder of the team’s depth and balance. And as the cricketing world waits for the high-voltage India vs Pakistan clash, Shivam Dube’s performance is bound to add extra confidence in the camp.
