Shreyas Iyer Shares Update After Freak Injury Put Him In ICU

Shreyas Iyer, recovering from a life-threatening rib injury in the final ODI against Australia, shares his first public message, thanking fans for their support as his recovery ‘surprises’ doctors.

October 30, 2025: In a massive relief to the cricketing world, India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has provided his first public update on his health since being admitted to St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney with a serious spleen laceration sustained during the third ODI. The injury, which caused internal bleeding and necessitated a stint in the ICU, is now on a remarkable path to recovery.

Iyer Thanks Fans in First Message

Taking to social media for the first time since the scare, the star batter shared an encouraging note for his well-wishers across the globe.

“I’m currently in the recovery process and getting better, every passing day. I’m deeply grateful to see all the kind wishes and support I’ve received – it truly means a lot. Thank you for keeping me in your thoughts,” Iyer wrote.

Surprising Recovery Rate

The BCCI has been closely monitoring Iyer’s progress in Sydney, and the latest reports indicate a faster-than-anticipated recovery.

  • Non-Surgical Procedure: BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed to the media that Iyer did not need surgery but underwent a “different procedure” to control the internal bleeding.
  • Doctor’s Surprise: Saikia told TOI that the batter’s recovery has “surprised the doctors,” who initially expected a lengthy recovery period.
  • Stable and Recovering: Iyer has been moved out of the ICU, has started his routine chores, and will be discharged when doctors declare him fit to travel.

Teammates Rally Around

Despite being miles away, Iyer remains in constant contact with his teammates. India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav and Mumbai teammate Shardul Thakur both confirmed that they have been in touch with Iyer via text and conversation.

Meanwhile, the BCCI is ensuring Iyer has support, as arrangements are underway for his sister, Sreshta Iyer, to travel to Sydney.

Out of Action & Rankings Boost

The Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain is expected to be sidelined for a significant period, likely six to eight weeks, effectively ruling him out of the upcoming three-ODI series at home against South Africa, starting November 30. His availability for the subsequent home series against New Zealand in January 2026 remains uncertain.

In a rare silver lining to his injury, Iyer has moved up one spot in the latest ICC ODI batter rankings to secure the ninth position, owing to his half-century performance in the Adelaide ODI.
