Shubman Gill Back in ICC Test Top 10 as Bumrah Faces Pressure from Mitchell Starc

The final ICC Test rankings update of 2025 has brought significant movement following the recently concluded Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground during the Ashes series between Australia and England. Despite India not playing Test cricket for the next several months, Indian players were among the notable movers in the rankings reshuffle.

Indian captain Shubman Gill has re-entered the top 10 of the ICC Test batting rankings. Gill benefited from Australian wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey’s drop out of the top 10, allowing the Indian batter to climb back up despite limited Test appearances earlier in the year. Gill is now the second-highest ranked Indian batter, behind Yashasvi Jaiswal.

At the top of the batting charts, England’s Harry Brook emerged as the biggest gainer. His resilient performances on a challenging MCG pitch helped him leapfrog three batters in the top five, finishing the year second only to Joe Root. Australia’s Steven Smith, meanwhile, slipped to fifth following a dip in form.

In the bowling rankings, Jasprit Bumrah continues to hold the number one position but is under growing pressure from Australia’s Mitchell Starc. Starc’s prolific Ashes campaign has pushed him up to second place, tied on 843 points with Pakistan spinner Noman Ali. With India set to be away from red-ball cricket for an extended period, Bumrah could feel the heat from rivals closing the gap.

Ravindra Jadeja remains firmly on top of the all-rounder rankings after a strong year with the bat. He enjoys a healthy lead over South Africa’s Marco Jansen in second place, while England captain Ben Stokes sits third. Washington Sundar and Axar Patel are tied at 11th, narrowly missing out on the top 10.

With the fifth and final Ashes Test scheduled as the New Year’s Test in Sydney, further changes in the ICC Test rankings could be imminent as the 2026 Test calendar gets underway.
