February 21, 2025: Shubman Gill's exceptional performance in India's Champions Trophy opener against Bangladesh has drawn praise from former cricketers, with Sanjay Manjrekar highlighting Gill's potential for a long and successful career. Manjrekar believes that Gill has the presence of a player who is built for the long haul, with his ability to stay composed under pressure and score centuries even when operating at just 60% of his potential.
Manjrekar's assessment came after Gill’s impressive knock of 101 not out off 129 balls, which anchored India's chase of 229. His innings, marked by nine boundaries and two sixes, saw him carry India to victory with six wickets in hand, despite a few setbacks in the middle overs. Manjrekar noted that Gill’s ability to adapt his game and adjust his tempo based on the match situation is a significant factor in his success.
One of the highlights of Gill's innings was a powerful pull shot off Tanzim Hasan, which soared into the second tier at deep midwicket, showing his ability to dominate even in challenging situations. According to Manjrekar, such shots highlight Gill's class and his readiness to take on any challenge in the game.
Former India leg-spinner Anil Kumble also praised Gill for his disciplined approach, especially against spin. Despite the slow pitch and the tough conditions, Gill rotated the strike efficiently and displayed great patience. Kumble pointed out that while Gill usually looks to take on offspinners, on this occasion, he played the ball with caution, realizing that the risk of stepping out and launching it over the field would be too great.
Manjrekar also emphasized Gill's traditional batting technique, which allows him to score singles at will while maintaining a strong defense. His ability to hit a six when needed and keep the scoreboard ticking made him a complete player in 50-over cricket. The fact that he stayed till the end to finish the game off for India spoke volumes about his maturity, according to Kumble.
Despite a brief scare when India lost quick wickets in the middle overs, Gill's calm and composed presence helped India recover and secure victory. Kumble noted that Gill's elegance and timing, especially on a pitch that was slower than usual, were a testament to his growing maturity and class as a batsman.
This knock, along with his overall approach to the game, has set the stage for a fantastic season for Gill and India, with both former cricketers and fans eagerly anticipating his future performances.
