Siraj's Grit Sparks New BCCI Policy, Putting a Spotlight on Jasprit Bumrah's Absence
New Delhi, India – August 6, 2025: Mohammed Siraj’s tireless, lion-hearted performance throughout the England tour has reportedly become the perfect catalyst for a major shakeup in Indian cricket. According to sources, India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar are now determined to end the long-running, and now highly scrutinized, practice of “workload management” that allows players to pick and choose which matches they play. This new policy is already putting a spotlight on the controversial decision to rest star pacer Jasprit Bumrah for two Tests in the recent series.
A New Era for Indian Cricket?
A new directive is reportedly being formulated within the BCCI to address the issue head-on. According to a PTI report, centrally-contracted players will soon be formally informed that the culture of opting out of games will no longer be tolerated.
A senior BCCI official, speaking on condition of anonymity, made the team’s position clear: “There have been discussions and the message will be sent across to the centrally contracted players, especially those who are all format regulars that this culture of picking and choosing games won’t be entertained in near future.” The official did, however, add a crucial caveat, saying that a “more objective approach” would be taken, but that player absences for “crucial matches” would no longer be accepted under the blanket excuse of workload management.
Gavaskar’s Passionate Plea
The public face of this debate has been none other than former India captain Sunil Gavaskar, who launched a passionate tirade against the very idea of workload management. Gavaskar’s comments, made on ‘India Today’, were inspired by Siraj’s gritty performance as he delivered 185.3 overs—the most by any bowler on either side—across all five matches.
Gavaskar made a powerful comparison, saying, “When you are playing for your country, forget the aches and the pains. On the border, do you think that the jawans are complaining about cold? What did Rishabh Pant show you? He came out to bat with a fracture. That is what you expect from the players. Playing cricket for India is an honour.” He added, “I hope that the word ‘workload’ goes out of the Indian cricket dictionary. I’ve been saying that for a long time… And I think that is the one thing that we all should keep in mind that this workload is only a mental thing, not so much a physical thing.”
The Bumrah Controversy: A Policy’s First Test?
While Gavaskar clarified that his comments were not aimed at any individual, the PTI report indicates that the very situation surrounding Jasprit Bumrah is a key reason for the policy change. Bumrah, who was rested for two of the matches, was absent despite proving his fitness in the IPL after recovering from back spasms earlier this year.
The report added that Bumrah’s absence “hasn’t gone down too well with the powers that be in the BCCI” and has even raised questions about the competence of the Sports Science team at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. The medical team had advised that the star pacer play just three games in the series to manage his injury issue, but in the wake of Siraj’s superhuman effort, the decision is now being scrutinized from a different perspective.
As the new policy takes shape, it’s clear that Mohammed Siraj’s resilience has forced the hand of the decision-makers. The debate has been ignited, and the future of workload management in Indian cricket will likely be defined by the performances of its most committed players and the management of its most valuable assets.
