March 5, 2025: Australian cricket star Steve Smith has announced his retirement from One-Day International (ODI) cricket following Australia’s four-wicket loss to India in the semi-final of the ICC Champions Trophy in Dubai. Smith, 35, made the decision after a distinguished career spanning 170 ODIs, marking the end of a remarkable journey in the 50-over format.
While stepping away from ODIs, Smith remains committed to representing Australia in Test cricket and T20Is, with a focus on contributing to the team’s success in these formats. His potential involvement in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where cricket will feature in the form of T20Is, could also influence his decision to continue playing the shortest format.
In a heartfelt statement, Smith expressed, “It has been a great ride and I have loved every minute of it. There have been so many amazing times and wonderful memories. Winning two World Cups was a great highlight, along with the many fantastic teammates who shared the journey.”
Smith acknowledged that the timing of his retirement felt right, emphasizing his desire to make way for the younger generation to prepare for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Despite retiring from ODIs, Smith is excited about his upcoming challenges in Test cricket, with the World Test Championship final and series against the West Indies and England on the horizon.
With over 5,800 runs in ODIs, including 12 centuries and 35 fifties, Smith is ranked among Australia’s top run-scorers in the format. His exceptional leadership also stood out, captaining Australia in 64 ODIs with a 50% win record, including successful series against England and India.
Smith’s contributions to Australian cricket were crucial in their World Cup victories in 2015 and 2023, and he leaves a legacy as one of the game’s greats. Cricket Australia, along with the National Selection Panel and CEO Todd Greenberg, have all praised Smith for his incredible career and his commitment to Test cricket.
As Australia gears up for the 2027 World Cup, Smith’s retirement marks a transition for the team, with several key players from the 2023 World Cup-winning squad already stepping away. However, Smith’s commitment to Test and T20I formats ensures that he will remain an integral part of Australian cricket’s future.
