Sudharsan and Jaiswal Lead India to 264/4 on Day 1 of Manchester Test

Half-Centuries from Left-Handers Anchor India’s Innings After England Opts to Field; Pant Sustains Injury

On Day 1 of the fourth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 at Old Trafford in Manchester, UK, India ended the day on a high note, with left-handed batters Sai Sudharsan and Yashasvi Jaiswal both scoring half-centuries to help the team reach 264/4. Ravindra Jadeja (19) and Shardul Thakur (19) were at the crease until the end of the day.

India stood at 149/3 after 52 overs, with Sudharsan (26) and Rishabh Pant (3) at the wicket as the last session started. The team lead by Shubman Gill rapidly passed the 150-run barrier in the 53rd over and then the 200-run mark in the 65th over.

A dramatic incident happened when Chris Woakes hit Rishabh Pant hard on the right foot with a crisp ball while he was looking well on 37. The injury looked bad right away, with a lot of swelling and some bleeding, making it hard for Pant to stand. The physiotherapist ran out, but it quickly became evident that Pant couldn’t go on. He had to be brought off the field in a car, and it was evident that he was in pain. Ravindra Jadeja took his spot.

Sai Sudharsan hit a boundary against Joe Root in the 69th over to get his first Test fifty. But in the 74th over, Ben Stokes got rid of Sudharsan (61 runs off 151 balls), and India lost their fourth wicket. The score was 235. Shardul Thakur hit a single off Liam Dawson on the second ball of the 79th over, which helped India surpass 250 runs.

India ended the day at 264/ Destroying 4. Jadeja and Thakur put together an unbroken 29-run stand off 55 balls before the end of the day.

Ben Stokes, the captain of England, was the best bowler, getting two wickets for 47 runs in 14 overs. Chris Woakes took 1 wicket in 17 overs (1/43) and Liam Dawson took 1 wicket in 15 overs (1/45).

England won the toss earlier in the day and elected to bat first. Indian openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul were careful at beginning, but both hit the boundary within the first three overs. Jaiswal had a close call in the opening over as a catch attempt at slip fell short. He also had a hard time against Woakes, who hit his bat several times, but Jaiswal stuck it out.

KL Rahul reached a big goal by becoming the fifth Indian batsman to hit 1,000 runs in Tests in England. He joined an elite group of players that includes Sunil Gavaskar, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, and Virat Kohli.

India made it through the first hour against England’s fast bowlers Woakes, Jofra Archer, and Brydon Carse, scoring 42 runs without losing a wicket. KL (21) and Jaiswal (13) were at the crease. After drinks, both openers kept adding to their innings. Ben Stokes, the captain of England, hit KL’s pad in his first over, but the opening stayed alive. Jaiswal’s well-placed cut shot, which found the gap between third slip and gully, moved India to 50 runs in 17.4 overs. Jaiswal got more aggressive at the end of the first session, hitting some strong strokes against Stokes and Jofra Archer, who were important in England’s win at Lord’s. India didn’t lose any wickets in the opening session.

India scored 264 runs in 4 innings against England. Sai Sudharsan scored 61 runs and Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 58 runs. Ben Stokes took 2 wickets for 47 runs.
