Sumit Nagal's Australian Open Play-off Hopes in Jeopardy After China Visa Rejection
India’s top-ranked tennis player, Sumit Nagal, has publicly appealed to Chinese authorities after his visa application to travel for the Australian Open Asia-Pacific Wildcard Play-off in Chengdu was rejected without explanation. The setback puts his crucial build-up to the first Grand Slam of 2026 in doubt.
Nagal, India’s current No. 1 singles player on the ATP Tour, took to X (formerly Twitter) to flag the issue, directly addressing the Chinese Ambassador to India and the spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in New Delhi.
In his urgent appeal, Nagal wrote:
“I am supposed to fly to China soon to represent India at the Australian Open playoff. But my visa was rejected without a reason.”
The appeal asks for “urgent help” to allow him to compete in the Play-off event, which offers the winner a direct main-draw wildcard into the Australian Open 2026.
The Australian Open Asia-Pacific Wildcard Play-off, scheduled to take place in Chengdu from November 24-29, is a key tournament organized by Tennis Australia and the Chinese Tennis Association. It provides regional players with a coveted pathway to the Grand Slam main draw.
For the 27-year-old Nagal, who has been India’s singles spearhead, missing this event would be a significant blow, as he looks to build on his recent momentum.
As of now, there has been no public comment from the Chinese Embassy, the All India Tennis Association, or Tennis Australia regarding Nagal’s specific case, leaving India’s No. 1 in an anxious wait.
