Sunil Gavaskar Brushes Off MS Dhoni's Retirement Speculations, Hails His Timeless Ability
March 23, 2025: Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has brushed aside any speculations surrounding MS Dhoni’s potential retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL). Addressing the constant questions raised about the legendary cricketer’s future, Gavaskar emphasized that every time these rumors surface, Dhoni proves them wrong with his continued brilliance.
In an appearance on Jio Hotstar, Gavaskar spoke highly of Dhoni, highlighting how the former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain continues to defy age. “Why should we even ask that question? Why put pressure on him?” Gavaskar said. “Every time people question MS Dhoni, he proves them wrong. Don’t doubt his ability. Even at this age, he’s hitting sixes not just past the boundary but into the stands during practice. Age is just a number when it comes to Dhoni.”
The 43-year-old Dhoni, known for his calmness under pressure, has continued to play a pivotal role in CSK’s success, particularly as a finisher in the IPL. Despite being a few years older than most of his contemporaries, Dhoni’s presence and ability remain unmatched in the tournament.
Gavaskar, who has been a prominent commentator in the IPL, also discussed the evolving tactics of modern-day batters, particularly during the powerplay. He observed that players are becoming more aggressive, focusing on maximizing the first six overs when only two fielders are allowed outside the 30-yard circle. “Batters are getting more adventurous and aggressive. They understand that the powerplay–where only two fielders are outside the inner circle–must be capitalized on,” said Gavaskar. “You have to aim for 10-12 runs per over and reach around 60-75 runs in the first six overs, even if you lose just one wicket. That creates a strong platform to push towards 180-200 runs.”
In his discussion, Gavaskar also acknowledged Dhoni’s remarkable consistency over the years. The CSK stalwart is just 19 runs away from becoming the franchise’s highest run-scorer in IPL history, a record currently held by former CSK icon Suresh Raina, who has scored 4687 runs for the team. Dhoni’s role as a finisher remains critical to CSK, even though his capacity to carry the innings has seen a gradual reduction with age.
Dhoni’s contribution to CSK is immeasurable, and despite speculation, it seems that he is nowhere near stepping away from the game, continuing to play a significant role for his team and Indian cricket.
