December 8, 2024: At the end of Day 2 in the Adelaide Day-Night Test, former Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar shared his thoughts on the exceptional innings played by Travis Head, who scored a brilliant 140 runs from 141 balls, showcasing an aggressive and attacking mindset that was pivotal in Australia’s dominant performance.
Gavaskar highlighted the mental approach that separates Head from many other players. He pointed out that the difference lies in Head’s mentality, which is focused on seeing every ball as a scoring opportunity. This aggressive attitude, according to Gavaskar, is akin to the approach of Rishabh Pant, who also looks to score on every ball.
“Well, because you see, I think it’s a difference in attitude. Where you look at every ball as a scoring opportunity, which is what he [Travis Head] does. Which is what Rishabh Pant also does. He looks at every ball as a scoring opportunity,” Gavaskar said. “Your attitude, your bat speed, everything has got to be different,” he added.
Gavaskar explained that while some players may focus on preserving their wicket, Head’s aggressive approach often puts bowlers on the back foot, especially in day-night Tests. He mentioned that Head’s ability to take on each delivery as an opportunity to score runs makes him a dangerous player, especially against a strong side like India.
“Travis Head, why is he so popular? Why is he so dangerous? It’s because he looks at everything as a scoring opportunity. And he’s successful more often than not. Particularly against India,” Gavaskar said, underscoring how Head’s aggressive intent has made him a key player for Australia in Test cricket, particularly in this format.

This century was Head’s third in pink-ball Tests, making him the second batter with the most hundreds in this format. Marnus Labuschagne, Head’s Australian teammate, leads the list with four centuries in day-night Tests.
