Sunil Gavaskar Honoured with Life-Size Statue at MCA’s Sharad Pawar Cricket Museum
Mumbai, August 24 – It was a moment of nostalgia, pride, and overwhelming gratitude as cricketing legend Sunil Gavaskar stood before his newly unveiled life-size statue at the entrance of the MCA Sharad Pawar Cricket Museum inside Wankhede Stadium. For fans and the fraternity, the sight of one of India’s greatest batsmen being immortalized at the heart of Mumbai cricket marked the beginning of a new chapter in celebrating India’s sporting heritage.
For Sunil Gavaskar, words seemed too small to match the enormity of the honour. “I am at a loss for words because I am overwhelmed by this unique recognition. Not everyone gets a statue just outside a museum where thousands will walk past daily. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has always been like my mother — it held my hand when I was beginning my cricketing journey. To be blessed with such love and respect is beyond imagination,” said the batting maestro, his voice heavy with emotion.
The statue now proudly stands at the grand entrance of the Sharad Pawar Cricket Museum, an 8,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art facility dedicated to celebrating Mumbai’s unparalleled contribution to Indian and world cricket. Alongside Gavaskar, visitors are greeted by the statue of Sharad Pawar, symbolizing leadership, resilience, and the legacy of Mumbai cricket.
The inauguration ceremony was a glittering affair, attended by dignitaries, legendary cricketers, administrators, and members of the city’s cricketing community. The museum will officially open its doors to the public from September 22, 2025, with online booking facilities to be made available soon for visitors eager to relive cricketing history.
Inside the museum, fans will embark on an immersive journey — from rare memorabilia and interactive exhibits to digital storytelling experiences that bring Mumbai’s cricketing legacy to life. Specially curated sections celebrate India’s cricket icons, the triumphs of women’s cricket, unforgettable World Cup moments, and the contributions of administrators and MCA’s member clubs. An audio-visual experience centre adds a modern touch, blending nostalgia with innovation.
This museum is not just about the past but also about inspiring the future — a living reminder of the city that gave Indian cricket some of its brightest stars.
With Sunil Gavaskar’s statue now watching over the entrance, the MCA Sharad Pawar Cricket Museum is set to become a pilgrimage spot for cricket lovers across the world. More than just bricks, statues, and displays, it is a heartfelt tribute to the enduring spirit of Mumbai cricket — a spirit that has shaped legends and continues to inspire generations.
