This Is How Navjot Singh Sidhu Reacts To Virat Kohli’s Test Retirement Decision

May 11, 2025: Amid mounting speculation over Virat Kohli‘s potential retirement from Test cricket, former India cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu has weighed in, stating that while Kohli‘s intent may be noble, the timing is inappropriate. The reports have sent shockwaves through the cricketing fraternity, especially with India gearing up for a challenging five-match Test series in England.

“Virat Kohli’s decision that he wants to retire has created a stir across the cricketing world. His intention is right, his motive is noble — that ‘the old order must change, yielding place to the new’,” Sidhu posted on X (formerly Twitter) Saturday night. “But the timing and occasion are not appropriate, because the pride and prestige of India are on the line.”

Sidhu emphasized the importance of Kohli’s experience, particularly after Rohit Sharma’s retirement from the format. “Why do I say Kohli can be our knight in shining armour in England? Because he has the experience. You can’t send an inexperienced side to England,” Sidhu added.

If confirmed, Kohli’s retirement would mark the end of a legendary Test career that spans over 14 years, featuring 123 matches, 9230 runs, and 30 centuries at an average of 46.85. He also captained India in 68 Tests — the most by any Indian skipper — and led the team to historic series wins at home and abroad.

Meanwhile, the BCCI has remained silent on the matter. PTI reported attempts to reach out to both chief selector Ajit Agarkar and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia for clarification, but neither have issued a response.

A senior BCCI source told PTI that there was indeed a discussion about handing the Test captaincy to Kohli for the England tour to give Shubman Gill more time to mature into a leadership role. However, with Kohli contemplating stepping away, that plan may now be shelved.

Kohli’s decision — if final — could leave the Indian team without its two most seasoned batters as it prepares for one of its most testing overseas challenges in recent years.
