Tim Southee Just Two Sixes Away To Equal With Gayle In His Farewell Match

December 14, 2024: Tim Southee’s achievement of equalling Chris Gayle’s record for most sixes in Test cricket (98) is a remarkable milestone in his career, especially considering his primary role as a bowler rather than a big-hitting batter. By smashing three sixes during his quickfire 23 off just 10 balls on Day 1 of New Zealand’s final Test against England, Southee not only showcased his aggressive batting style but also highlighted his contribution to New Zealand’s middle and lower order over the years.

Southee is now just two sixes away from becoming the first player to hit 100 sixes in Test cricket, a milestone that could elevate him above some of the game’s biggest names in terms of six-hitting, including England’s Ben Stokes (133), New Zealand’s Brendon McCullum (107), and Australia’s Adam Gilchrist (100). For a fast bowler, Southee’s batting has often been a surprise weapon, and his ability to clear the boundary has earned him a reputation for providing valuable cameos down the order.

Southee received a guard of honour from the England team led by Ben Stokes as he went out to bat and was quick into his work, taking the opposite captain apart. Southee smashed a couple of sixes against Stokes before hitting another one off Gus Atkinson in the next over, followed by a boundary. Southee’s blitz took him level with Chris Gayle, no less, on the list of batters with the most number of sixes in Test cricket (98).

This achievement comes as part of what is being described as his farewell series, with the Hamilton Test against England marking the final chapter of his illustrious international career. It’s fitting that he would reach such a notable record during his final Test, adding an extra layer of significance to the match.

England will be eager to break the remaining partnerships quickly on Day 2, but Southee’s record-equalling sixes and Santner’s gritty knock have added some spice to the contest, making for an exciting finish to what promises to be a memorable Test match and farewell for Tim Southee.
