‘Tough to Accept…’: Did Djokovic Hint on Retirement Plans After Loss to Sinner?

After a straight-set defeat to Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon 2025 semi-final, Novak Djokovic reveals he plans to return next year, even as age and injuries take their toll

London | July 12, 2025
Novak Djokovic’s dreams of a record-extending Wimbledon crown came crashing down on Friday as the 38-year-old tennis legend was outclassed in straight sets by World No. 1 Jannik Sinner. But the greater shock came after the match — when Djokovic addressed growing retirement speculation and confirmed he isn’t done yet.

“I’m planning to come back definitely at least one more time, play on the Centre Court for sure,” Djokovic told reporters, signaling that 2025 is not the final chapter of his storied career.

The defeat — 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 — was a painful reminder of the toll time takes, even on champions. Djokovic, who battled through injury in his quarter-final win, looked physically diminished throughout the match. “It’s just age, the wear and tear of the body,” he admitted. “The reality hits me right now, last year and a half, like never before.”

Despite his setbacks, Djokovic remains one of the most consistent players on tour. He reached the semi-final of every Grand Slam this year, yet he acknowledged the mounting challenge of facing younger, sharper opponents. “I have to play Sinner or Alcaraz. These guys are fit, young, sharp… I feel like I’m going into the match with tank half empty.”

Djokovic also highlighted the emotional toll of seeing his body falter despite immense dedication to fitness. “I don’t know what I can do differently… I’d like to challenge everyone out there to see if anybody takes care of themselves more than me. And I, unfortunately, don’t get rewarded for that right now.”

Injuries and fatigue have become constant companions for the Serbian icon, who has now hinted that his career may extend into 2026. “It’s tough for me to accept… When I’m fresh and fit, I can still play really good tennis. I’ve proven that this year.”

Djokovic, the last active member of the ‘Big Three’ era, remains a symbol of longevity in modern tennis. Whether Wimbledon 2026 becomes his swan song or not, fans can expect at least one more Centre Court appearance from the 24-time Grand Slam champion.
