Veteran official Manik Gupta was officiating match at Sapru Stadium
February 20, 2026: A veteran cricket umpire, Manik Gupta, lost his life after a swarm of bees attacked players and officials during a match at Sapru Stadium in Unnao. Gupta, a respected figure in the Kanpur cricket circuit and a member of the Kanpur Cricket Association, had just completed officiating his match and went to meet a fellow umpire during the drinks break when the incident occurred.
According to his brother Amit Kumar Gupta, a swarm of bees suddenly descended on those present at the ground. While attempting to escape, Gupta reportedly lost his balance and fell, after which the bees swarmed over him. Fellow umpire Jagdish Sharma said several others were also attacked, but Gupta, being older, was unable to outrun the swarm and suffered severe stings. He was rushed for medical assistance but could not be saved.
Gupta had been umpiring for nearly 30 years and served as a state panel umpire, earning respect for his dedication to the sport. Neighbour Bhartendu Puri described him as wholly devoted to cricket and committed to supporting his family through his profession. The tragic incident has left the local cricket community in shock.
