Novak Djokovic defeated American favorite Taylor Fritz in four sets to reach a record-extending 53rd Grand Slam semifinal. The victory sets the stage for a highly anticipated clash against rival Carlos Alcaraz.
September 3, 2025: Novak Djokovic, who is without a doubt the best player of all time, made it to the semifinals of the men’s singles at the US Open 2025 after upsetting fourth seed Taylor Fritz 6-3, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4. This win earns Djokovic his 53rd Grand Slam semifinal, which is a record, and his 14th time in the last four at Flushing Meadows, which ties his record.
Djokovic has never lost against Fritz in a head-to-head encounter, and this win gives him an unbelievable 11-0 record. The American player staged a brief comeback in the third set, but the Serbian star was too strong. Fritz, who came in second in 2024, is going. This means that the U.S. will still not have a male singles champion at a major since Andy Roddick won in New York in 2003.
Djokovic will play Carlos Alcaraz, a five-time major champion he knows well, in the semifinals. Alcaraz, who hasn’t lost a set in the tournament, won his spot by beating No. 20 Jiri Lehecka 6-4, 6-2, 6-4. The following game is going to be a lot of fun. Djokovic has a 5-3 edge over Alcaraz in their head-to-head matchups. He won their last two matches at the Australian Open and the Paris Olympics last year.
The last men’s quarterfinal matches will be on Wednesday. Alex de Minaur will play Felix Auger-Aliassime, and defending champion Jannik Sinner will play Lorenzo Musetti in an all-Italian match.
