Following Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s record-breaking IPL century at 14, former Olympian Vijender Singh raises concerns about age fraud in Indian cricket, prompting online speculation and calls for a BCCI investigation.

New Delhi, May 1:
Former Olympic medallist Vijender Singh has stirred a fresh controversy in Indian cricket by raising suspicions of age fraud, just days after 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi smashed a sensational century in the IPL 2025. The former boxer posted a cryptic message on X, formerly Twitter:

The timing of the post, just after Suryavanshi’s historic knock, has led many to believe that Singh’s comment may be a veiled dig at the young Rajasthan Royals batter.

Suryavanshi’s Meteoric Rise Draws Scrutiny:

On Monday, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, playing only his third IPL match, stunned the cricketing world with a 35-ball century against Gujarat Titans—the fastest by an Indian in IPL history, and second-fastest overall. At just 14 years and 32 days, he became the youngest-ever centurion in T20 cricket.

However, his performance has now led to a wave of age-related speculation on social media. Some users have dug up old videos of Suryavanshi giving interviews, claiming he appeared older than stated, with one post reading:

“No way Vaibhav is 14. This is a 3-4-year-old video where he admits he looks younger than his age. This must be probed by @BCCI.”

Age Fraud in Indian Sport: A Persistent Issue

Age fraud has been a long-standing issue in Indian sports, especially in cricket and wrestling. Despite stricter verification protocols introduced by the BCCI, cases still occasionally slip through the cracks, often aided by fake documents or local-level misreporting.

While there is no official confirmation that Suryavanshi is under investigation, the viral social media buzz and Vijender Singh’s public comment have put pressure on BCCI to respond.

What’s Next?

Whether Vijender’s comment was aimed specifically at Suryavanshi or a general observation remains unclear. However, with the stakes high in professional cricket and age-group records, calls for transparency and verification are growing louder.

The BCCI is yet to issue a statement on the matter.
