After retiring from Tests and T20Is, Virat Kohli’s availability for the 50-over format is now in question. The chief selector’s reported attempts to contact the star batter have led to a “sense of pessimism” within the team management.

September 24, 2025: The future of two of India’s biggest cricket stars, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, in the ODI format is still unclear. A report says that head selector Ajit Agarkar is waiting for the two former captains to make their plans clear. This comes before India’s tour of Australia, where they will play three ODIs.

Revsportz said that the team management is feeling “pessimistic” because Kohli hasn’t been communicating with them. Earlier this year, Kohli withdrew from Test cricket, but it was thought that he would still be available for ODIs.

The same thing is going on with Rohit Sharma. He has also retired from both Test and T20I formats, just like Kohli. The two last played competitively in the IPL 2025, and their last game for India was the Champions Trophy final in March of this year.

Reports said before that the team management wanted both players to play in the recent one-day series between India A and Australia A to get in shape for games. However, neither player was named in the squad, which just adds to the rumors regarding what they will do next in cricket. Even though there was some doubt, reports say that both Kohli and Rohit passed their required pre-season fitness tests given by the BCCI, which means they are physically ready.

In another piece of news, renowned Indian hitter Shreyas Iyer is said to have taken a vacation from red-ball cricket for a while. Iyer, who was selected captain of the India A team, pulled out of the second unofficial Test against Australia A because of a back problem. Sources say that Iyer has officially told the BCCI and Ajit Agarkar that his body can’t handle the physical demands of the lengthier format. In the first unofficial Test, he didn’t do well, scoring only 8 and 13.
